"We got really tight with Browner," shared Newton. "We would always go in his class, joking with him and sharing moments together. We talked about everything: basketball, life outside the court… whatever came to mind."

A 60-minute session awaited them every day of the week, shortened slightly to 50 minutes on Fridays. Yet, regardless of the clock, the gym was their true home, with Browner by their side, lending both guidance and levity.

"We viewed him as more than just our coach," Castle noted. "He was someone we could confide in about anything. That connection was invaluable, especially with the man calling our plays."

The bond the trio built on the hardwood translated seamlessly to the car rides home after practice. Browner reflected, "Steph and Jakai would ride home with me daily. Those drives were what really solidified our relationship... It was about understanding what made them tick beyond just the game."

As fate would have it, their homes even aligned. With both boys moving into new houses, they were unexpectedly neighbors, a tremendous twist in their friendship's already rich tapestry.

"Steph moved right across the street," Newton recalled with a smile.

Though the pair had been friends for as long as they could remember, the timeline of their friendship remains a blur to Newton, while Castle pinpointed their origin to second grade, during their first AAU practice.

"I met Jakai in second grade," Castle reminisced. "We were in the same class, and I remember being pleasantly surprised to see him at our first AAU practice."

Both young athletes quickly formed a bond that would surpass the basketball court, spilling over into their day-to-day lives. With backyard hoops and cul-de-sac competitions, they were often found in the midst of friendly rivalries. Castle’s mother, Quan, fondly dubbed it "one of the best cul-de-sacs you’ve ever heard of," describing a constant stream of one-on-one games that solidified their skills and friendship alike.

“You always knew where to find them,” Browner observed, showcasing the depth of their connection. "If Steph wasn’t at Jakai’s house, Jakai was at Steph’s. They shared something unique."

This partnership was laced with competitive spirit, a fiery bond that had the boys pushing each other’s limits through rigorous games.

"During games, we were both locked in, but the trash talk became part of the fun before and after,” Newton elaborated.

As the duo forged ahead through high school, basketball became the centerpiece of their friendship. A proud testament to their bond was the AAU championship they secured together, a trophy that solidified their shared journey through the sport.

While their families also grew close, it was Castle’s father, Stacey, who played a crucial role in shaping their basketball aspirations from a young age. A former player for Wake Forest and UCF, Stacey mentored the boys during their formative years, instilling discipline and resilience.

"Uncle Stacey was hands-down one of the best coaches I ever had," Newton stated emphatically.

His coaching style was marked by tough love—a stark contrast to typical "daddy ball," as Newton put it. They accepted constructive criticism, pushing through challenges that would fortify their resolve for the future.

Continuing their path, both Castle and Newton faced the momentous signing day at Newton High. Choices loomed large: Newton set his sights on the Hoosiers, while Castle committed to UConn. The excitement surged as both found themselves on the brink of a new chapter.

As Castle prepared to transition from high school to college basketball, he embraced a new role—shifting from a primary ball-handler to an off-ball combo guard, a decision he accepted for the betterment of the team, thanks to UConn coach Dan Hurley’s guidance.

However, the anticipation reached a fever pitch when both friends were scheduled to clash on the college hardwood. Hopes of facing off were swiftly dashed as injury sidelined both Newton and Castle shortly after. Nevertheless, the significance of representing their respective schools remained a profound experience.

Castle flourished in his new role, making notable contributions as UConn marched toward the NCAA championship. His performances solidified his reputation as a player who could elevate his team's success.
